Frequently Asked Questions
Who can join classes?
Ages 13+ for all wheel throwing classes and most workshops. Private family sessions can be arranged by appointment.
I’m not sure of my level—how do I choose?
Newbie classes are for those who have never worked with clay before.
Beginner are for people who have taken a class or two or who are new to the wheel.
Intermediate is for those who are comfortable centering on the wheel and shaping forms, but have goals such as taller forms, lighter forms, and different textures.
What’s included in an 8-week class?
Instruction with demos in each class, a 25 lb bag of white stoneware, use of studio tools, all glazes and firings, and a supportive learning environment.
What should I wear/bring?
Comfy clothes you don’t mind getting clay on, hair tied back, short sleeves, and a water bottle. You can use our tools and/or bring your own if you have them.
When will my pieces be ready?
Typically 3–4 weeks after your class/workshop to allow for drying, bisque firing, glazing, and glaze firing. For those taking workshops, we’ll email when ready for pickup.
How do Open Studio hours work?
Open Studio is independent practice for Intermediate+ makers (no instruction). You can buy a 10-hour pass: $150 (or $60 for currently enrolled students), then drop in during posted hours. All firings are handled by our team.
Can I use my own clay or glazes?
To protect our kilns and shelves, you can only use studio clay and house glazes.
Are the glazes food safe?
Our standard house glazes are food safe when properly applied and fired. Raku pieces are decorative only (non-food-safe and not watertight).
Do you offer make-ups if I miss a class?
We offer one make-up per 8-week session when space is available, or you can use Open Studio time to catch up. Missed workshops are non-transferable unless we can fill your spot.
What is your cancellation/refund policy?
Classes (8-week): Full refund or credit if canceled 7+ days before start. Within 7 days, we’ll issue studio credit if we can fill your spot.
Workshops/Privates: Refund/credit if canceled 7+ days before start; otherwise non-refundable unless we can fill your seat.
What happens if the studio closes for weather or emergencies?
We’ll email and post updates. We’ll offer a make-up, Open Studio credit, or reschedule as appropriate.
Can I bring food or drinks?
Water and closed-lid drinks are fine. Please keep food away from wheels and glaze areas.
Do you sell gift cards?
Yes! Great for birthdays and “let’s try clay” surprises. Email us to set one up.
Do you host private events or team outings?
Yes—birthdays, date nights, team builds, and more. We can tailor wheel or handbuilding experiences.
Will everything I make survive the kiln?
We do our best, but ceramics can be unpredictable. Cracks/warping can happen—especially with thick or very thin forms. It’s part of the learning journey!
Is Sugarland Studios accessible?
Parking is on a paved driveway but there are stairs going into the studio. Let us know any access needs ahead of time and we’ll do our best to accommodate.
