Meet Your Instructor
Hi, I’m Heather O’Halloran. I began experimenting in clay many years ago at Idyllwild Arts Academy’s adult summer camp and was hooked. Over the years I’ve taken classes in countries I’ve lived in and visited. Now, I’m thrilled to open a studio where I can share my pottery experience.
For me, clay is a medium of play that evolves into functional forms and expressive art. While it feels good to create vessels that are structurally sound and pleasing to the eye, most of my creations are memory capsules that tell me where I was when I made it, who was with me in the studio, what technique I was practicing, and so on
My hope for my students is they will become comfortable building and expressing through clay.
It’s not about perfect pieces—it’s about the joy of making.

Sugarland Studios is a friendly neighborhood pottery studio offering ceramics classes in Poolesville, MD—right in Montgomery County’s Agricultural Reserve. We help first-timers and returning makers discover the joy of clay through wheel throwing, handbuilding, and playful workshops on our microfarm (yes, you may spot horses, alpacas, and curious chickens).
Brand new—launching Fall 2025. Small classes, welcoming vibes, and plenty of room to get messy.
Our Story
Sugarland Studios was created as a place where people slow down, try something with their hands, and leave a little happier. Tucked along a scenic byway near Homestead Farm and Rocklands Farm Winery, our studio is nature-inspired and community-minded—perfect for anyone searching “pottery classes near me” in upper Montgomery County.
